Albert Einstein (1879-1955), one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, wrote: »I remind myself a hundred times a day that my inner and outer life depend on the work of other people, living and dead, and that I must try to give back to them as much as I have received or am still receiving from them.« The humanity of a society is reflected in its treatment of its most vulnerable members, who are undoubtedly the elderly. More than ever, they need to feel safe and protected, especially with regard to respect for their personhood and fundamental human rights.
The authors of the stories in this collection are older people, their relatives, carers, friends and bystanders. In their stories, they write about how they live, how they cope with major challenges such as loneliness, dementia and lack of attention from their fellow human beings.

Life writes stories. Happy, interesting, amazing and sad. So are the stories or testimonies in the book you are holding in your hands. One of the greatest challenges facing all developed societies, and Slovenia is no exception, is the ageing population.
More elderly people unfortunately also means more ageism, both in our society and in the rest of the world. It is our duty to respond to any violation of human rights on grounds of age.
Everywhere in the developed world, including here in Slovenia, there are more and more lonely people. However, as human beings are social creatures, they need social contacts and friends.
Volunteering is a fulfilling activity that gives you the feeling that you are useful because you can help. Many people need our help. There are many lonely people in old people’s homes.
Be active and look forward to every day. Life can be beautiful, even if you are elderly.
Biserka Marolt Meden, Adviser to the President of the Republic of Slovenia
