Stories of Refugees (ed.: dr. Majda Naji)

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) defines refugees as people who are unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin because of a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion. Often they have had to flee with little more than the clothes on their backs, leaving behind their homes, possessions, jobs and loved ones.

Many famous people in human history have been refugees: the scientist Albert Einstein, the prophets Jesus Christ and Muhammad, the politician Karl Marx, the educator Jan Amos Komensky and others.

Refugees, their relatives, caregivers and representatives of governmental, non-governmental and humanitarian organisations present their stories in this collection. The emphasis is on a personal approach, using techniques of writing and storytelling.

Majda Naji, editor

Many refugees become well-known and successful, pouring their talent, knowledge and experience into their new societies. But many more refugees live among us silently and overlooked, often doing the lowest paid jobs that are beyond their education, because we don’t recognise their papers or because they can’t get better jobs, or because they are lucky to be able to get a job at all and support themselves.

The collection brings together the stories of different refugees, from Syria, Bosnia, Croatia, Iran, Palestine, Ukraine. We find the story of one of the Izbrisani, who to this day remains an ugly stain on the conscience of the country of Slovenia.

Soon enough, we will have to face waves of climate refugees, who will see their islands overrun by the sea or their countries invaded by deserts. It is not their fault that they too will have to flee to places unknown.

Eva Tomič, Adviser to the President of the Republic of Slovenia
